A Letter of Recommendation

To whom it may concern, (Dear Mr. or Madam,)

It is my great pleasure to recommend one of my best students, Ms. Jung-un, SHIN as a candidate student for Department of Piano at College of Music in Seoul National University. I have known her for three years as her homeroom and English teacher at Busan High School of Arts. It was March 2010 when I came to know Ms. SHIN as her first homeroom teacher.

Both through the accomplishment of her study field and musical performance she showed her excellency and gave a strong impression to me. In fact, during the three-year course of studies including musical activities, she tried her best  to rank the top position among 240 students in music department for 3 semesters. In addition, she was more excellent in her music field than other students and had the honor to participate in the 25th Busan Musical Performance as one major player. As for her, the more important one is that she is an owner of good characteristics, such as diligence, active participation, and the spirit of challenge, which are fundamental and necessary to get the goal.

Although she is young and has some room to progress, judging from her ceaseless endeavor and an unyielding positive mind, I am sure that she will be one of the most promising and successful students in your university and be a tremendous asset to your school finally. Again, I would like to recommend her to you without reservation.

I would like to give my appreciation for your time and warm consideration for her and this letter, and It would be my best pleasure as her teacher to see her wonderful achievements in the field of music and study at your university. If you have any questions or need more references, please feel free to contact me.

                                                                                       Yours Sincerely,

                                                                                             Eric Ryu

 Farmers' Market

Always bring lots of small bills and change. You will be paying at each individual farmer's stand and there is no central checkout or ATM. Bring large cloth shopping bags. It will save multiple trips to your car to unload.

Old baby and toddler carts make good shopping carts. They fold up nicely in the trunk. If you use wire folding cart, put in a box or liner or your produce will work through the wire squares.

Fanny packs are the best way to keep money and keys. You don't have to worry about setting a purse or a wallet down and you have both hands free to shop and carry bags.

Make sure you know where your car keys are. The number one lost and found item is car keys. Nine times out of ten the shopper unconsciously puts the keys in one of the produce bags.

When you first arrive, walk through the entire market and look at all the offerings before you buy. There are many differences in prices for the same produce type and quality.

These are outdoor markets. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.

Bargaining for small amounts is not well received. Bargaining for big boxes or great amounts is usually acceptable. Remember that these are the growers of the produce you are bargaining for. Do not insult them. They worked very hard to sell so cheap.

Most of the produce is unsorted and field run. Some of the best tasting fruit is cosmetically challenged.

Most of the produce is vine or tree ripened. This means they can be delicate to the touch. This is fruit only found direct from the grower. It is too fragile to ship
to the wholesale market.

If the farmer is not too busy, do not hesitate to ask questions about recipes or growing methods. You might even get to know each other's name.

Have patience with the growers. They are not polished sales people, they are farmers. They were up late picking and irrigating and up early to load and drive the truck several hours to market.

If you smile at and appreciate them, you will find them smiling back and appreciating you in return. That is what certified farmers' markets are really about. Smiles and mutual appreciation. Families growing food for families. Californians supporting California.

Students demonstrated martial arts as part of the Chinese New Year celebration at John F. Kennedy High School on Feb. 2.

20 Korean educators joined JFK annual Chinese New Year Luncheon
with the staff

The annual Chinese New Year luncheon at John F. Kennedy High School brought together staff, students, parents and visiting teachers from Korea on Feb. 2. The auspicious celebration kicked off the Chinese Year of the Rabbit. On campus, Chinese music was played between classes. Students Daniel Li and Chris Lim announced the New Year over the school intercom system, teaching students traditional Chinese phrases. Principal Chad Sweitzer invited 20 visiting Korean educators to the Asian Cuisine Clubs luncheon. The visiting dignitaries found the experience fascinating, because they could not imagine that a student club could host such a wonderful luncheon. The students prepared traditional Chinese dishes and selected Chinese music. Delicious and beautifully packaged chocolates from the Shanghai World Exhibit 2011 were supplied by Melissa Lee. Approximately two hundred people attended the lunch, which was a colorful and festive event. Some guests were dressed in traditional Chinese outfits and passed out red envelopes. The red envelopes symbolized good luck. Beautiful banners on display at the luncheon were made by Diana Duong.
